  • 2 μιαίνω

μιαίνω (Hom.+) fut. μιανῶ (Hs 5, 7, 2); 1 aor. ἐμίανα, ptc. μιάνας. Pass.: fut. 3 sg. μιανθήσεται LXX; 1 aor. ἐμιάνθην; pf. μεμίαμμαι, ptc. μεμιαμμένος (B-D-F §72; W-S. §13, 1; Mlt-H. 223; 249). The primary sense ‘to stain’ (as of dye [Il. 4, 141]) prepares the way for the transf. sense of causing defilement through socially or cultically unacceptable behavior. It is well to keep in mind in connection with the use of this term and cognates that in the Gr-Rom. world harmonious relations with the transcendent realm were understood to be dependent on careful observance of certain moral and ritual proprieties. Individuals were subordinate to interests of the community and violations of standard moral and ceremonial expectations could jeopardize the delicate balance between an entire populace and its deities. In our lit. only in transf. sense
to cause someth. to be ritually impure, stain, defile (Jos., Bell. 4, 201; 215, Ant. 11, 300 al.; GJs 8:2) pass. ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν J 18:28 (cp. 1 Macc 1:63 ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν τοῖς βρώμασι). On this subject s. Schürer II 83f; Bousset, Rel.3 93f.
to cause the purity of someth. to be violated by immoral behavior, defile (Pind., Aeschyl. et al.; Kaibel 713, 9 οὐ χεῖρα φόνοισι μιάνας. Less freq. in prose, e.g. SIG 1240, 7 ὑβρίσει μιάνας; PFlor 338, 18; LXX; EpArist 166; Philo; Jos., Bell. 4, 323) τὶ someth. τὰς χεῖρας Ac 5:38 D. σάρκα Jd 8; Hm 4, 1, 9; Hs 5, 7, 2–4. τὸ πνεῦμα 5, 6, 5; 5, 7, 2. ἑαυτόν 9, 17, 5. τὴν ἐντολὴν τοῦ κυρίου defile the commandment of the Lord m 3:2; cp. • 11 μιαίνω

    Grammatical information: v.
Meaning: `stain, soil, defile, esp. defile through bloodcrime'.
Other forms: aor. μιᾶναι, μιῆναι, pass. μιανθῆναι (Il.), fut. μιανῶ (Cyrene, Antipho), pass. fut. a. perf. μιανθήσομαι, μεμίασμαι (Att.), act. perf. μεμίαγκα (Plu.), pass. aor. subj. 3. sg. μιᾳ̃ w. fut. μιασεῖ (Cyrene; Schwyzer 743 w. n. 9 a. 786),
Compounds: Rarely w. prefix as ἐκ-, κατα- συν-. Comp. μιαι-φόνος `committing a defiling murther, stained by murther', adjunct of Ares (in E und Φ, B., Hdt., E.; μιη-φόνος Archil.) with - έω (Att.), - ία (D., D. S., Plu.). -- Isolated are w. χ-suffix (Schwyzer 498, Chantraine Form. 403f.) the expressive μίαχος μίασμα, μιαχρόν \<οὑ?\> καθαρόν H.
Derivatives: μίασμα n. `defilement, abomination, horrible stain' (IA; on the formation etc. Porzig Satzinhalte 241), μιασμός m. `defilement' (LXX, Plu.), μίανσις f. `id.' (LXX); μιάστωρ m. `defiler, avenging ghost, avenger' (trag., late prose; - σ- as in μίασμα, cf. also ἀλάστωρ and Schwyzer 531; unnecessary objections in Fraenkel Nom. ag. 2, 24); μιάντης m. `id.' (EM), ἀ-μίαν-τος `unstained' (Thgn., Pi.), w. des. of a stone = asbestos (Arist., Plin., Dsc.). -- Beside μιαρός (Il.), μιερός (Call.) `defiled, soilt, polluted, esp. through bloodcrime' with μιαρ-ία (Att.), - ότης (An. Ox.).
    Origin: IE [Indo-European]X [probably] [966] * smei(d)- `semear'
Etymology: "With the r-n-change - αίνω: - αρός, μιαίνω: μιαρός ( ἰαίνω: ἱερός?; s. Fraenkel Glotta 20, 92 f. with Debrunner IF 21, 32 a. 43) follow a wellknown scheme" says Frisk; a certain non-Greek agreement is however not known; but r\/n after a is hard to explain as IE. Improbable or quite uncertain hypotheses: to Skt. mū́tram n. `urine', Av. mūÞra- n. `impureness' (Fick GGA 1881, 1427; agreeing Bechtel Lex. 227; in vowel deviating); to Lith. máiva `marsh-bottom', miẽlės `yeast', Germ., e.g. OHG meil(a) `stain, blemish' (Persson Beitr. 1, 221; the last with Grienberger and Wiedemann), to which after H. Petersson Heteroklisie 180 ff. (w. further uncertain combinations) also Arm. mic, gen. mc-i `dirt, mud' (IE *miǵ-). -- The 1. member in μιαι-φόνος is prob. as in ταλαί-πωρος to be taken as verbal (" ὁ μιαίνων φόνῳ"); beside it μιη-φόνος like Άλθη- beside Άλθαι-μένης [but this remains unexplained]; a long syllable was metr. needed. Details in Schwyzer 448. A subst. *μι(Ϝ)ᾱ, esp. with a supp. loc. μιαι- (Persson Stud. 155, Bechtel Lex. s.v. a. Dial. 3, 118f.) is not credible. -- WP. 2, 243 w. more forms, Pok. 697, Fraenkel Wb. s. máiva. - Blanc, BSL 96(2001)153-179 tries to connect Goth. bi-smeitan `besmear, strike', bur there is no certain evidence for s- in Greek, which would have unlengthened * smei-; the development of the meaning in Germanic is difficult. If there is no etymology, the word will rather be Pre-Greek. Did it have *mya(n)-, with palatal *m-? We know that an \/a\/ could be pronounced as [e] after a palatalized consonant; so here we may have the origin of the ε\/α- alternation in Greek.

  • 15 λίπα

    Grammatical information: adv.
    Meaning: `fat, gleaming'.
Other forms: in Hom. only elided ( ἀλείψασθαι) λίπ' ἐλαίῳ etc., unelided λίπα in Hp., Th. (cf. Leumann Hom. Wörter 309f.),
Derivatives: Here, (as direct derivv., with ρ: ν-variation?): λιπαρός `fat, (of oil or unguent) gleaming, fruitful' (Il.) with λιπαρία `fatness' (Dsc.) and λιπαίνω `make fat, oil, anoint' (IA.) with λίπανσις `anointing' (medic.), λιπαντικός `good for anointing' (sch.), λιπασμός `anointing' (Dsc.), λίπασμα `fat substance' (Hp., hell.). More verbs are: λιπάω `gleaming from unguents' (τ 72, hell.), `anoint' (Nic.), λιπάζω trans. `id.' (Nic.). Innovated σ-stm (Schwyzer 512): λίπος n. `fat' (A., S., Arist.) with λιπώδης `fatty, oily' (Thphr.); also λίπας n. `id.' (Aret.; after κρέας?).
    Origin: XX [etym. unknown]
Etymology: A formal agreement to λίπ-α from a root-noun (cf. Schwyzer 622) gives Skt. rip- f. "smearing on", `defilement, deceit'. Closely agreeing are λιπαρός and Skt. rip-rá- n. `discord, dirt', further λίπος and Skt. répas- n.' stain, dirt' (would be Gr. *λεῖπος); in the last case however we have independent parallel formations. Doubtful is Alb. laparós `defile' (s. Fraenkel Wb.; s. below). - (Not here ἀλείφω `anoint', with vowel prothesis; see s. v.). The other languages show diff. formations: nasal present Skt. li-m-p-áti `smear' (aor. 3. pl. midd. a-lip-s-ata;), Lith. li-m-p-ù, inf. lìp-ti `stick, be sticky'; yot-present in OCS pri-lьp-lǫ, inf. pri-lьp-ěti `stick'. With very diff. meaning Germ., e.g. OHG bi-līban `stay, remain'. Quite doubtful for its meaning Hitt. lip(p)ānzi (3. pl. pres.), `oppress (?)'. - More forms in Bq, WP. 2, 403f., Pok. 670f., W.-Hofmann s. lippus, Fraenkel Wb. s. lìpti 2. Vgl. λίπτω. So the meanings give no agreement.

  • 16 μολύνω

    Grammatical information: v.
    Meaning: `defile, stain, sully'.
Other forms: mostly presentstem (Att.), μολυνῶ, μολῦναι, - υνθῆναι etc. (hell.).
Compounds: Also with prefix, e.g. ἀνα-, συν-.
Derivatives: μόλ-υνσις, - υσμός `defilement, staining' (LXX, Str.), - υσμα `stain' (late). - υμμα `id.' (gloss.); μολυνίη ἡ πυγή H. (cf. Scheller Oxytonierung 40), μόλυχνον δυσταλέον (leg. αὑσταλέον?) H. -- Here also Μολόεις Boeot. rivern. ("the filthy", Krahe Beitr. z. Namenforsch. 2, 232f.) from *μόλος (s.b.)?
Origin: PG [a word of Pre-Greek origin]X [probably]
Etymology: Denominative in - ύνω from an unknown basis. After J. Schmidt KZ 32, 384 to Lith. mul̃vė `mud, mire', mul̃vinti `cover with mire'; to geta greement also in the stemvowel, he assumes an original *μαλύνω (αλ = Lit. ul from IE *). A comparison *μαλύνω: mul̃vinti with - υν- = - vin- from IE -u̯n̥- (thus Fraenkel Gnomon 22, 237) is impossible, as mul̃vinti is a Lith. factitive of mul̃vė. Of the many other words for dark, impure colours, for `dirt, defile', which have been assembled in WP. 2, 293f. and Pok. 720 f. under * mel(ǝ)-, here only Skt. mála- m. n. `dirt, muck' is of interest, from which malavant- `dirty', formally = Μολόεις; on an agreeing *μόλος, - ον `dirty' μολ-ύνω (cf. αἰσχύ-νω, σκληρ-ύνω etc.) and Μολόεις could have been built. -- Cf. μέλας and μώλωψ; cf Mayrhofer KEWA s. málam. - Fur. 227 compares φολῡ́νει μολύνει H., which might point to a Pre-Greek word.
